Simple ways to SECURE ONLINE INFORMATION

  • Create complex passwords, ALWAYS! Use a few letters from each character set such as: 3 Capital letters, 3 lowercase letters, 3 numbers, and 3 symbols. (Example: GIXhps491$*%) Do not use words that you would find in a dictionary. Do not use your initials or your dogs name, that goes for cats, fish, iguanas, etc.. Do not use numbers such as addresses, or birthdays, or other number combinations that are related to you.
  • Do not use the same password for different sites. (New site, New password).
  • Update the computers or cell phones operating system when updates become available.
    I wait a day or more to see if users are complaining about updates having issues.
  • Update your current OS, applications, and or programs that you currently use.
  • Update web browsers.
  • Ignore spam.
  • Turn off opt-ins and auto updates. Do the update when you want to do the update.
  • Shut your PC down if not using it.
  • LOCK your computer if you need to leave your computer unattended. (Windows: Win + L – Linux: Ctrl + Alt + L)
  • Use virtualization.
  • Secure your local home network hardware devices. Update passwords, turn off WiFi broadcast,
  • Use two-factor authentication.
  • Use encryption.
